Born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in 1841, Gustav Anton Duerler’s family immigrated to Texas in the 1849, settling in San Antonio, Texas. He was apprenticed in a printer’s office at an early age and worked in that field and in clerical positions before serving in the Confederate army for three years.
